THE EVIDENCE WASN'T THERE

What Blackthorn, a fuel empire and real players taught us

There has been a minor investigation taking place in the Still Alive: Idle Discord.

Blackthorn Industrial Estate has been visible for a little while.

Players could see the requirement:

Salvaging Level 30 + Documentary Evidence

The level requirement was straightforward.

The evidence was not.

People searched. Theories appeared. Questions were asked.

Panda, in particular, became increasingly convinced that Rowan knew more than he was letting on.

Unfortunately for Rowan, he was innocent.

We forgot to release the evidence.

THE ACTUAL PROBLEM

The Blackthorn gameplay gate worked.

The Journal and documentation system worked.

The Blackthorn Industrial Estate Trade & Delivery Directory had been created.

But the Directory itself had not actually been released into the discoverable world.

Players were therefore trying to solve a mystery that had no solution.

There is no elaborate technical explanation for this one. The requirement was visible, the document existed, and we had neglected to put that document somewhere players could find it.

That was our mistake.

WATCHING PEOPLE PLAY

Developing a system gives you knowledge that a player does not have.

You know the invisible rules. You know which state the game is in, why an action is blocked and what a label is meant to communicate.

Players only know what the game actually tells them.

This update contained several reminders of that difference.

Construction progress disappeared when changing activities, even though a longer building project should feel like something you can pause and return to.

Storage protected locked items, but did not clearly show their lock state or explain a failed transfer.

Cooking Mastery looked enough like a requirement that players could reasonably think it unlocked or blocked recipes. It does neither.

Character Creation made parts of progression and its blockers harder to understand than they needed to be.

An edge case allowed Device and Cloud survivor rosters to disagree about which slot Character Creation was meant to use.

And Blackthorn asked for evidence that could not be found.

Not every useful Alpha report is a conventional bug.

Sometimes the system works internally but fails to communicate itself to the person trying to use it. The outcome is still wrong.

THE FUEL EMPIRE

Then there was fuel.

One tester discovered that the early-game fuel-processing loop was considerably more profitable than intended.

Enough offline Salvaging and fuel processing could create a small fuel empire, turning contaminated canisters into expensive upgrades much earlier than the wider progression expected.

The system was not crashing. The recipes completed. The rewards arrived exactly where the rules told them to arrive.

The numbers simply created an outcome we had not anticipated.

That is precisely the kind of emergent balance problem real testers uncover. A spreadsheet can suggest that an economy is sensible. A player will politely industrialise it by morning.

The fuel conversions have now been rebalanced, and online and offline Salvaging rewards have been brought into closer alignment.

WHAT CHANGED

Construction projects now persist. They can be paused, resumed or deliberately abandoned, while legitimate active progress still survives time away from the game.

Storage now communicates locked items more clearly. Eligible equipment can be equipped directly from Storage while at Base, while remote Storage remains useful for viewing rather than magically retrieving an axe from a cupboard halfway across Ashwick.

Cooking now makes the difference between recipe requirements and Mastery clearer. Recipes depend on Cooking level, ingredients, cookware and the required appliance. Mastery records familiarity with a recipe and can improve its benefits. It does not unlock the recipe.

Character Creation now moves more clearly through Your Survivor, Occupation, Traits and Your Refuge, with improved feedback around names, trait points, conflicts, portraits and Global Skill XP.

Survivor creation is also safer when Device and Cloud rosters disagree about a requested slot.

The complete factual record is available in the Patch Notes.

BLACKTHORN IS FINALLY OPEN

The Directory is now genuinely discoverable while searching the streets of Ashwick.

It identifies four parts of the Industrial Estate:

Morrow & Sons Hardware
Blackthorn Fabrication
Northbridge Distribution Depot
Blackthorn Utilities Yard

Players still require:

Salvaging Level 30 + Documentary Evidence

This time, though, we promise the evidence actually exists.

Probably best not to ask Rowan where it is. He has been through enough.

WHAT CLOSED ALPHA IS FOR

Still Alive: Idle will continue changing before 1.0.

Closed Alpha is not simply about finding crashes.

It is about discovering where systems, balance and interfaces stop making sense when real people interact with them.

Sometimes that means fixing a bug.

Sometimes it means changing an interface.

Sometimes it means rebalancing an economy.

And sometimes it means admitting that everyone searching for a clue was not missing something.

We were.

Thank you to everyone testing, reporting, questioning and occasionally building an economic empire before breakfast.

Still Alive.
